(ECNS) -- The first batch of 1,900 cross-boundary green electricity trade certificates was issued in south China's Hainan Province on Wednesday, marking a milestone between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong and Macao administrative regions.

Green electricity certificate is a form of electronic identification for renewable energy sources.

"Green certificate" is the electronic "ID card" of this renewable energy, and it is the only certificate that identifies the production and consumption of green electricity. One green certificate corresponds to 1,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy. Power producer Baishabangxi solar farm of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Company will generate about 1.9 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity to Hong Kong and Macao.

In 2023, Hainan Province has reached a total of 85.27 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity trading, a reduction of 25,000 tons of standard coal, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 64,000 tons.

Green electricity refers to electric energy with zero or near zero carbon dioxide emissions in the production process, such as wind power, photovoltaic power, geothermal power and so on.
